Photo courtesy of THE NEED Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career? 처음으로 음악 경력을 쌓도록 영감을 준 사람 또는 것은 무엇입니까? When I was in elementary school, my dad played Michael Jackson for me, and it completely blew my mind. We used to dance and listen to music together every day. That was the beginning of my love of music. Then in middle school, a friend of mine who also loved music played me a beat he made. I remember thinking, “I want to make something like that.” That’s when I started producing. 초등학교 때 아버지가 마이클 잭슨 음악을 들려줬는데, 그게 어린 저에겐 정말 충격이었어요. 그때부터 아버지와 함께 매일 춤추고 음악 듣는 게 일상이었고, 그게 제가 음악을 사랑하게 된 시작이었죠. 그러다 중학교 때 음악 좋아하던 친구가 직접 만든 비트를 들려줬는데, "나도 이런 거 만들어보고 싶다"는 생각이 들었어요. 그때부터 본격적으로 작곡을 시작했습니다. How have your personal music tastes changed over time, and do your personal music tastes influence the music that you produce? 시간이 지남에 따라 개인적인 음악 취향은 어떻게 바뀌었나요? 그리고 개인적인 음악 취향이 제작하는 음악에 영향을 미치나요? Before I started making music, I listened to all kinds of genres, though I didn’t even know what “genre” was back then. In middle school, I fell in love with EDM and spent years producing electronic music. As I got older, I shifted towards trap soul, and that’s where I stayed for a while. I used to only make what I liked to listen to, but lately I find myself less influenced by other artists. I’m focused on developing my own production identity now. 음악을 만들기 전에는 정말 장르 구분도 없이 이것저것 다 들었어요. 장르 개념도 몰랐거든요. 그러다 중학교 때 EDM에 푹 빠져서 몇 년간은 전자음악만 만들었고요. 이후에는 트랩소울 쪽으로 옮겨갔고, 꽤 오랫동안 그 장르에 머물렀어요. 예전에는 내가 좋아하는 음악만 만들었는데, 요즘은 다른 아티스트들의 영향을 덜 받고, 제 사운드를 만들어가는 데 더 집중하고 있어요. What is something people might be surprised to know about what it’s like to be a music producer? 음악 프로듀서가 된다는 것에 대해 사람들이 놀랄 만한 것은 무엇인가요? I think people often imagine the life of a music producer to be glamorous, but in reality, it can get pretty lonely. Spending so much time alone in the studio [has] affected me mentally. I became more irritable and emotionally closed off for a while. But over time, I learned how to manage my mental state, and now I feel more balanced and in control. 사람들이 흔히 음악 프로듀서의 삶을 화려하게만 상상하는 것 같아요. 근데 실제로는 꽤 외로운 일이에요. 스튜디오에서 혼자 있는 시간이 많다 보니 정신적으로도 영향을 많이 받았고, 한동안은 예민해지고 감정적으로 좀 닫혀 있었어요. 하지만 시간이 지나면서 제 멘탈을 관리하는 법을 배웠고, 지금은 훨씬 더 균형 잡히고 안정된 상태예요. Please describe your newest single, “two of us.” 가장 최근에 발매한 싱글 "two of us"에 대해 설명해 주세요. “two of us” is a pre-release single from my upcoming full-length album. It's my own interpretation of pop. I think it's a track that’s easy to listen to but still carries a lot of energy. I made the beat with YOUHA in mind, so I reached out [to see if she would feature], and she absolutely nailed it. I was honestly blown away. The full album has a lot of strong tracks and great features, so I hope people look forward to it. "two of us"는 제 정규 앨범에 앞서 공개된 선공개 곡이에요. 팝이라는 장르를 제 스타일로 재해석한 곡이고, 듣기엔 편하지만 에너지도 꽤 있는 트랙이에요. YOUHA를 염두에 두고 만든 비트라서 바로 연락했는데, 진짜 완벽하게 소화해줘서 깜짝 놀랐어요. 앨범 전체에 좋은 트랙과 피처링들이 많으니 기대 많이 해 주세요. Out of all of the songs you have worked on, which one… 작업한 모든 곡 중에서… … took the longest to make, and why? …제작에 가장 오랜 시간이 걸렸던 곡은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요? Not a single track, but twlv’s K.I.S.S album as a whole. We spent months working side-by-side, constantly tweaking and refining. It was my first time producing a full album, and it taught me a lot. 특정 곡이라기보다는 twlv의 앨범 K.I.S.S 전체요. 몇 달간 옆에서 붙어 앨범 전체를 함께 만들었고, 계속해서 수정하고 다듬는 작업이 반복됐어요. 저한테는 처음 맡은 전체 앨범 프로듀싱이었고, 정말 많은 걸 배웠어요. … was the fastest to make, and why? …가장 빨리 제작되었던 곡은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요? BIBI’s “Fedexx Girl.” She recorded it over a jazz beat but sent me the acapella [version] and told me to [produce] it in my own style. I made it super quickly; it just clicked. BIBI의 "Fedexx Girl"이요. 원래는 재즈 비트에 녹음된 곡이었는데, 아카펠라를 받아서 제 스타일로 다시 만들었어요. 작업이 너무 빨리 잘 돼서 신기할 정도였어요. … is your personal favorite, and why? …개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 곡은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요? “KAZINO” [by BIBI]. That track changed a lot for me. More people started reaching out [after the song came out], and I felt like it shifted my career. There’s still a long way to go, but that moment felt important. BIBI의 "사장님 도박은 재미로 하셔야 합니다 (Kazino)." 그 곡이 제 커리어에서 전환점이 됐어요. 그 이후로 많은 사람들이 저에게 연락을 주기 시작했고, 뭔가 달라졌다는 느낌이 있었어요. 아직 갈 길은 멀지만, 그 순간이 정말 중요했어요. … was the most nerve-wracking and/or challenging to make, and why? …제작하는 것이 가장 긴장되거나 어려웠던 곡은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요? The album I’m working on right now. I’m making all the decisions myself, and having that much creative control is both exciting and terrifying. But it makes me want to create something truly special. 지금 작업 중인 제 앨범이요. 전부 제 손으로 결정해야 해서 무섭기도 하고 책임감도 크지만, 덕분에 진짜 특별한 걸 만들고 싶다는 의욕도 커졌어요. What career would you be pursuing today if it could not be music-related? 음악과 관련되지 않았다면 지금 어떤 직업을 하고 싶으신가요? Probably something business-related, like creating a brand or opening a store. 아마 비즈니스 쪽이었을 것 같아요. 브랜드를 만들거나, 가게를 열거나. What is your advice for aspiring producers? 지망생 프로듀서들에게 어떤 조언을 해주시겠어요? It’s great to aim to work with big-name artists, but if nobody’s listening to your music right now, find artists around your level and grow together. Treat them like partners and build something real. 유명한 아티스트와 작업하고 싶은 마음은 당연하지만, 아직 아무도 내 음악을 듣지 않는다면, 나랑 비슷한 레벨의 아티스트들과 함께 성장하는 게 좋아요. 파트너는 중요합니다 What are your short-term and long-term career goals? 단기 및 장기 커리어 목표는 무엇인가요? I’ve already had a Billboard 200 [Chart Number One Song] as a producer, but I want to create a Billboard Hot 100 [Number One] track - preferably more than one. And someday, I’d like to start my own label and help develop new artists. That’s something I’m keeping in the back of my mind. 이미 프로듀서로서 Billboard 200 1위를 한 적이 있지만, Billboard Hot 100 1위 트랙을 만들고 싶어요. 가능하면 하나가 아니라 여러 개요. 언젠가는 제 레이블을 차려서 신인을 발굴하고 키우는 일도 해보고 싶어요. 머릿속 한 켠에 늘 있는 목표예요. Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music? 마지막으로, 본인이나 음악에 대해 더 하고 싶은 말씀이 있으신가요? I believe that if I was born into this world, I should live it on my own terms. I’m here to leave behind a legacy through the music I make. I’m not interested in being remembered as just another normal person.
