I talked to DJ MINIMONSTER about making his NCT remixes, perceptions of DJs in South Korea, and more. Photo courtesy of MINIMONSTER Is there a particular reason why you chose the stage name “MINIMONSTER”? “MINIMONSTER” is a compound word that expresses me, who is short in stature but deals with the genre of monster sounds. How and when did you first get into DJing? After hearing Korn's album The Path of Totality, I started to become interested in electronic music. I bought a device called a Numark Mixtrack Pro 8 years ago and have been DJing at college festivals since then. How did you first start working on remixes for SM Entertainment? I contacted SM Entertainment when they started making the first remix album [through the “iScreaM” ongoing project]. Do you hope to work with more SM Entertainment artists in the future? Is there any particular artist or song you have in mind? It's really fun to work on any song in my style. In particular, there are many parts that match EXO’s musicality and color, so I want to try [remixing] EXO’s music. For those who do not know much about DJing, what is the process like when making a remix? What steps do you follow? Although it is different [depending] on the vocal melody, I first work on the chords that fit my musical mood. After that… I work in the order in which inspiration strikes me. How long does it typically take to finish working on a remix, and how quickly do your remixes get released after you are finished with them? The job usually takes three days at least and one week at most. [The release timing] varies by company. SM [Entertainment] handled it quickly. Are there any fellow DJs you consider to be an inspiration, someone you’ve learned a lot from and/or whose musical style you appreciate? I have a lot of fellow DJs around me who inspire me musically. Also, there are so many foreign artists who inspire me. Artists I listen to often are Skrillex, Space Laces, and MUST DIE! But there are so many more that I can't list them all. Are there certain types of songs you prefer to remix, or are you open to remixing songs from all kinds of genres? I can make any genre my style. Do you have any behind-the-scenes stories to share about working on NCT remixes? For the first remix, we made four versions of the NCT 127 [“Kick It”] remix with different endings. [The remix of “Hot Sauce” by NCT DREAM was made in] two versions with completely different styles. What is your favorite DJing gig you have played so far? Never Say Die Records's tenth anniversary concert in Los Angeles is one of the most memorable. It was the most enjoyable concert. I remember every single performance from that day. Do you have a dream venue that you want to perform a DJ set at someday? There are so many stages of my dreams, such as Lost Lands and Tomorrowland. What are some common misunderstandings about what it’s like to be a DJ? In Korea, the club image is generally not good. It is only considered a space for hunting girls. Therefore, the perception of DJs who mainly work there is also not very good. But it seems to [be getting] better with time. What is next for you? Do you have any spoilers that you can share about any songs you are currently working on remixing? There is no work being remixed right now. The production of a personal EP has been completed, and I'm working on singles by Korean vocalists. Additionally, I think I can deliver interesting news through SM Entertainment.
