Melody & Christine’s Cosmic Convictions

The duo details the emotions, efforts, and experiences that shaped their new album.

What three words or phrases best describe your new album, Tides? 
“Energy,” “Love,” and “Hope.”

What three words or phrases best describe the process of making Tides? 
“Teamwork,” “Authenticity,” and “Perseverance.”

How different is the final version of Tides compared to your original concept for it? Do you think the last few years greatly changed the album? 
Yes, definitely. One example is “Forever Young,” a song inspired by our families and the experiences we've shared over the years. If we had written it earlier, it would have carried a completely different meaning. There were also several songs and sections that we ultimately decided not to include because they no longer fit the overall concept of Tides. If we released this album earlier, we probably would have released every song we had created as [one] collection. This time, we wanted the album to feel like a carefully-curated journey, where every track contributed to a cohesive story and emotional flow.

When in the album-making process did you decide on the album title? 
The title came naturally after we finished the song “Tides.” Although the track doesn't have any lyrics, its melodic progression tells a story of transformation. It begins with a feeling of hope, then it goes darker, with more introspective elements in a minor key, and gradually evolves into an uplifting piano melody filled with hope again. We feel that life follows a similar rhythm. We all experience difficult seasons, but there's always hope waiting on the other side. When we listened to the completed album from beginning to end, “Tides” perfectly captured the spirit of the entire project, making it the obvious choice for the title track.

Is there any symbolic significance to the album cover having multicolored waves? 
We wanted the artwork to feature a beautiful water element while staying connected to the cosmic imagery we've established throughout our previous releases. That's why we chose sparkling, almost celestial-looking waves. The multicolored waves symbolize the vibrant energy that connects us all. We believe we're all cosmic beings experiencing life here on Earth, and the artwork reflects that balance between the universe and our everyday human experiences.

Was there anything in particular during the making of Tides that pushed you out of your comfort zone? 
Melody: I became much more involved in the track arrangement process than I had been before. I worked with new samples and experimented with sounds that we normally wouldn't use. It pushed me creatively and encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone, which ended up being a really rewarding experience. 
Christine: When it came to the production side, I leaned more into electronic and ambient influences than I have in the past, moving away from a more traditional pop approach. Ambient electronic music has always been a huge inspiration for me, and I wanted to incorporate more of those textures while still bringing in my classical piano background, which has always been a core part of my songwriting. In the past, I usually started writing songs from the melody first. This time, however, I was much more open to letting a beat, a sample, or even a particular sound spark the creative process. It was a much less structured way of working than I was used to, but it allowed me to explore new ideas more freely. Overall, I approached the album with a much more open mind creatively, and I think that really shaped the final sound of Tides. 

What have the reactions been like so far to Tides?  
The response has been incredibly positive. Our families have been so supportive throughout this journey. They've watched this album evolve over many years, so they're just as excited as we are to finally see it released. Our friends and fans have also been incredibly kind and encouraging. We've received so many thoughtful messages, and we're truly grateful for every one of them. It means a lot to know the music is connecting with people. 

Do you have any plans to release music videos for the songs on Tides? 
We've already created and released lyric videos for several of the songs, but we don't have plans for official music videos at the moment. That said, we're always open to creative collaborations, so you never know what the future might bring. 

How did you know when Tides was finally ready to be released? 
Christine: Honestly, it was difficult, especially from a mixing and mastering perspective. I could spend forever making tiny adjustments to every track. Deciding which effects to use, how much processing is enough, and balancing every little detail can become an endless process. Over time, though, I've learned that nothing in life is ever truly perfect. Even now, I can still hear little things I might have done differently, but I'm genuinely happy with how the album turned out. It's the best expression of where I am creatively at this moment. 
Melody & Christine: One of the biggest lessons this album taught us was learning when to let go. Perfectionism can easily kill momentum. Going forward, we want to enjoy the creative process more and not get so caught up in perfecting every tiny detail, even when it comes to the vocal recordings. Sometimes the beauty of music is simply allowing it to exist and moving on to the next creative adventure.

Melody & Christine’s Track-by-Track Breakdown of Tides

“Enter Cosmos” serves as the introduction to our universe. We wanted to create a simple, feel-good electronic track that feels like the beginning of a journey into space — almost like surfing across a glowing nebula. 
Christine: While producing it, I experimented by layering snippets of Melody's vocals from our previous releases. It started out as something fun to try, but surprisingly, everything blended together beautifully, so I kept it that way. It's actually one of my personal favorites on the album. 

“If I” was originally released as a single, but for this album, we asked our dear friend Seongmin Jeong from Korea to remix and remaster it. We chose it as the first vocal track on the album because it immediately immerses listeners into the cosmic world of Melody & Christine. The song tells the story of a girl living in the distant future who hears stories about a forgotten planet called Earth — a place once filled with crystal-clear oceans and incredible beauty. Drawn by curiosity and longing, she sets out on a journey to find the planet, while also searching for a deeper understanding of herself. MIYAVI’s guitar work adds a cinematic quality that perfectly complements the story. 

As the album's title track, “Tides” represents the emotional journey we all experience throughout life: the highs and lows, the constant ebb and flow, and the transformation that comes with time. We experimented with new samples while producing this song, and Melody became much more involved in the arrangement process. One of our favorite moments was blending expressive piano melodies with synthesizer leads, which has become a signature part of our sound. The song perfectly captures the message we want the album as a whole to convey. 

“Halcyon” was our very first single, released in 2023, and it will always hold a special place in our hearts, because it marked the beginning of our project together. 
Christine: For the album, I revisited the mix to give it a fresh polish while preserving everything that made it special. The song speaks about a love that exists beyond space and time, and MIYAVI’s beautiful guitar performance brings that emotion to life powerfully. 

“Crazy Little World” reflects the world we're living in today, a world shaped by technology, artificial intelligence, and social media, where it's becoming increasingly difficult to stay connected to our authentic selves. We wanted to write a song that encourages people to hold onto their own identity while navigating this rapidly-changing world. Our long-time friend and producer, Yuichi Nakase, who also worked with Melody during her solo J-pop career, contributed arrangements that really elevate the track. 

“In the End” is a single we originally released in 2023 before remixing it for Tides. We wrote it shortly after seeing images of the Russia-Ukraine war on the news. Watching the news was heartbreaking, especially seeing innocent children caught in the conflict. We felt compelled to express those emotions honestly, using direct lyrics rather than hiding behind metaphors. MIYAVI’s guitar adds another emotional layer to the song, helping communicate both grief and hope. 

“One in a Million” actually began nearly fifteen years ago, back when we first started thinking of releasing an album together. At its heart, it's a song about believing in yourself and embracing who you truly are. It's also a message we hope our children will carry with them throughout their lives: that no matter how difficult life becomes, they should never give up, because every person is truly one in a million. One of our favorite details in the song is that you can hear our children singing in the chorus. Including their voices makes the message even more meaningful and adds a unique, heartfelt touch that perfectly reflects what the song is about. 

“Forever Young” was written after being inspired by the joy and togetherness of our family reunion [during] Christmas [of] 2024. Our families had gathered together, and watching all of our children opening presents, laughing, and simply enjoying being together became one of those unforgettable moments you wish you could freeze forever. We got the kids to sing in [this] song as well! It was a fun process to record the children’s voices. [We] also included a small audio clip from that Christmas morning in the pre-chorus. If you listen carefully, you can faintly hear the children in the background, opening their presents. Lyrically, the song reflects on how quickly life passes by and reminds us to cherish every moment with the people we love. Tomorrow is never guaranteed, and the time we spend with family and friends is ultimately the most valuable thing we have. 

“Halcyon – Lunar Mix” is a reinterpretation of “Halcyon” that feels much closer to its original demo. Earlier versions of the song were simpler, built around synthesizers and guitar with a slightly darker, edgier atmosphere. We wanted listeners to hear another side of the song and experience how it evolved throughout the creative process. 

“Halcyon – Taku Takahashi Remix”: We're incredibly grateful that our dear friend, Taku Takahashi of m-flo, created this remix for us. He brought his own signature style to the track while preserving its emotional core, giving it a nostalgic, late-‘90s, electronic vibe that feels both fresh and familiar. We couldn't think of a better way to close the album.
