maeshima soshi has creative, genre-defying music, and I was excited to ask him all about it! Photo courtesy of maeshima soshi How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of it? My music is based on hip-hop, but it has a chill atmosphere. I also think that the music has a strong melody element. Which do you like better: songwriting or singing, and why? I started as a track maker, so I’m good at arranging and composing, and I like it. I don’t have many opportunities to write lyrics, but I hope I can increase [the amount of opportunities] in the future. Do you like making solo songs more than collaborations, or do you like collaborations more than solo songs? Why? I like both collaborations and solos. However, collaborations [are] more exciting! Collaboration is always welcome. How do you think you have grown as a musician since you first started making music? What are you better at now than when you started? At first, I could only make sounds that were bound by hip-hop. Now, after collaborating with various artists, I can make popular things such as pop sounds. I think my mind has become more flexible and my composition skills have improved. Photo courtesy of maeshima soshi Please tell us the concept of your latest album, Monopolize. Monopolize is a collaboration with singer OHTORA. I’ve done a lot of work with OHTORA, but he said, “I want to try something more experimental!” And I think it’s darker than usual. Do you have any plans to increase collaboration with OHTORA in the future? How do you feel about working with him? OHTORA is [from] the same label and management company! His production speed is very fast, so I think [we] will continue to release many works together. He’s still underrated, but he’s definitely going to be big! Who is the most enjoyable and/or memorable artist with whom you have collaborated? It was a great honor to be able to participate in the [latest] work of the popular Japanese idol [group] V6. What are your music career goals and dreams? It [would be best to] calm [my] mind and continue making music for a long time. [And] as long as I am in the world of music, I would like to collaborate with artists from various countries, not just Japan. Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to start songwriting or become a singer? Making a lot is key! Whenever I make a lot of songs, there are challenges and discoveries in them. Are you working on new music, and can you give any spoilers? I’m always writing new songs. [The company] also plan[s] to start a new unit [in] 2022.
