Kim Hye Rim: “I may be writing about flowers, but I’m really writing about people.”

For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “Kim Hye Rim is ___” or “Kim Hye Rim’s music is ___”?
아직 당신의 음악을 접해보지 못한 분들을 위해 본인의 음악을 어떻게 소개하고 싶으신가요? "김혜림은 ___이다" 또는 "김혜림의 음악은 ___이다"라는 문장을 완성한다면 어떻게 표현하시겠어요?
I’d describe my music in one phrase: “healing and encouragement.” Even though I explore different genres, the message I want to share has always been the same. Some songs offer comfort, while others simply give people a chance to pause, breathe, and recharge. I don’t believe music can change someone’s life overnight, but I do believe it can give someone the strength to get through one difficult day. If someone listens to one of my songs and walks away feeling even a little lighter than before, I think my music has done its job. 
저는 제 음악을 한마디로 **‘힐링과 응원’**이라고 표현하고 싶어요. 장르는 다양하지만 제가 음악을 통해 전하고 싶은 마음은 늘 비슷한 것 같아요. 어 떤 곡은 누군가를 위로하고, 어떤 곡은 잠시 쉬어갈 수 있는 시간을 선물해 주기도 하죠. 저는 음악이 사람을 하루아침에 바꾼다고 생각하지는 않아요. 하지만 힘든 하루를 조금 더 버틸 수 있는 힘은 줄 수 있다고 믿어요. 누군가 제 노래를 듣고 “조금 괜찮아진 것 같아.“라고 느낀다면, 그걸로 제 음악은 충분한 의미를 가진다고 생각합니다. 

What are the three biggest influences on your music?
본인의 음악에 가장 큰 영향을 준 세 가지 요소는 무엇인가요?
It’s hard to narrow it down to just three, but the first influence that comes to mind is my older sister. She loved listening to music when we were growing up, so I naturally fell in love with pop music as well. Looking back, I think those moments of listening to her favorite artists together shaped who I am today. 
하나만 꼽기는 어렵지만, 가장 먼저 떠오르는 건 제 언니예요. 어릴 때부터 언니가 음악 듣는 걸 정말 좋아해서 저도 자연스럽게 팝 음악을 접하 게 됐어요. 언니가 좋아하던 아티스트들의 음악을 함께 들으며 자란 시간이 지금의 저를 만든 것 같아요. 
The second influence is the environment I grew up in. As a child, I entered singing competitions, joined a choir and an orchestra, and even performed in musicals. I also remember watching Victorious and thinking, “I want to become someone who sings like that someday.” After going through audition programs and beginning my career, that dream slowly changed. More than becoming a singer, I wanted to become someone whose music could comfort people and give them the courage to keep moving forward.

두 번째는 제가 살아온 환경이에요. 어릴 때는 동요 대회와 합창단, 오케스트라, 뮤 지컬 등 다양한 무대를 경험했어요. 그때는 드라마 **〈Victorious〉**를 보면서 “나 도 저렇게 노래하는 사람이 되고 싶다.“는 꿈을 꾸곤 했죠. 하지만 오디션 프로그램을 거치고 실제로 활동을 하면서 제 꿈도 조금씩 바뀌었어 요. 이제는 누군가에게 위로가 되고, 다시 일어설 용기를 줄 수 있는 음악을 만들고 싶다는 마음이 더 커졌어요. 
The third influence comes from films and TV dramas. A single scene or emotion often stays with me long after I’ve finished watching, and many of my lyrics begin from those moments. In the end, I think the songs I write are meant for other people, but before anyone else, they’re the words I most need to hear myself!
마지막은 영화와 드라마 같은 다양한 콘텐츠예요. 저는 영화를 보다가도, 드라마의 한 장면을 보다가도 그때 느꼈던 감정이 자연스럽게 가사로 이어지는 경우가 많아 요. 결국 제가 쓰는 노래들은 누군가를 위한 이야기이기도 하지만, 가장 먼저 저 자신 에게 들려주고 싶은 이야기인 것 같습니다.

Do you have a signature fandom color? If not, what color best represents your music, and why?
공식 팬덤 색상이 있나요? 없다면 본인의 음악을 가장 잘 나타내는 색은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
I don’t have an official fandom color yet. I used to think my music was represented by bright, vibrant colors. But now, I feel that no matter what color I start with, it eventually becomes my own. That’s why I think white represents me best. To me, white is the color with the greatest possibilities. It blends with every color, but it can also become something completely new. I hope to be that kind of artist, someone who isn’t defined by a single genre or image, but keeps discovering new colors along the way. 
아직 공식 팬덤 색은 없어요. 예전에는 제 음악을 표현하는 색은 밝고 선명한 색이라고 생각했는데, 시간이 지나 면서 생각이 조금 달라졌어요. 요즘은 어떤 색을 가져다 놓아도 결국 제만의 색으로 만들어가는 느낌이 들더라고 요. 그래서 지금은 흰색이 가장 저다운 색이라고 생각해요. 흰색은 가장 많은 가능성을 가진 색이라고 생각해요. 어떤 색과도 자연스럽게 어우 러질 수 있고, 또 전혀 새로운 색을 만들어낼 수도 있으니까요. 저 역시 하나의 장르나 이미지에 머무르기보다 계속 새로운 모습을 보여드릴 수 있 는 아티스트가 되고 싶습니다. 

Please talk about one of your newest singles! 
가장 최근에 발표한 곡 중 하나에 대해 이야기해 주세요!
If I had to describe “My Secret Garden” in one sentence, it would be “I’m simply myself.” For a long time, I struggled with my self-esteem and sense of identity. I even began losing confidence in my music. This song isn’t really something I wanted to say to other people. It’s a letter to the version of myself who needed to hear it the most. The message I wanted to leave behind through this song: “You don’t have to become someone else. You’re already enough. Stop comparing yourself to others. No matter what you’ve been through, you’ll bloom beautifully again.” I especially hope it reaches people who need encouragement or have lost confidence in themselves. But even if you’re simply having a good day, I hope it’s still a song you can enjoy with a smile!
**‘My Secret Garden’**을 한마디로 표현하면 **‘나는 나일 뿐’**이라는 이야기예 요. 저는 오랫동안 자존감과 정체성에 대해 많은 고민을 했어요. 그러다 보니 자신감도 점점 작아졌고, 음악을 하는 제 자신까지 믿지 못했던 순간들이 있었죠. 그래서 이 곡은 다른 사람에게 하는 이야기라기보다, 가장 힘들었던 시기의 저 자 신에게 보내는 편지 같은 노래예요. “누구처럼 되려고 하지 마. 너는 너야. 누구와도 비교하지 말고, 어떤 일을 겪었든 결국 다시 아름답게 피어날 거야.” 그 말을 음악으로 남기고 싶었어요. 저처럼 자신감이 많이 떨어졌거나, 응원이 필요한 분들에게 꼭 들려드리고 싶은 곡 이에요. 물론 그런 상황이 아니더라도 기분 좋게 들을 수 있는 노래가 되었으면 좋 겠습니다. 

Can you share some behind-the-scenes or “TMI” stories from making “My Secret Garden”?
'My Secret Garden'을 녹음하거나 공연하면서 있었던 비하인드 스토리나 소소한 이야기(TMI)를 들려주실 수 있나요?
We shot [the video] at Mindungsan, and the higher we climbed, the more beautiful the scenery became. The trail was lined with flowers, and it almost felt like we had stepped into the world of the song. There was also a funny moment when we started hiking. Our producer said, “Alright, let’s go!” But less than a minute later, he was already out of breath, asking, “How much farther do we have to climb?” I still laugh whenever I think about it! It wasn’t an easy shoot. The sun was much stronger than we expected, and because we were filming, I couldn’t even use an umbrella while hiking. By the end of the day, my sun allergy had flared up pretty badly. There were also bees everywhere, because of all the flowers. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, but I’ll admit I got a little nervous every time one flew past me. Looking back, though, the nature, the fresh air, and that incredible landscape all became part of what made “My Secret Garden” feel so special. 
가장 기억에 남는 건 녹음보다도 뮤직비디오 촬영이었어요. 촬영을 위해 민둥산에 갔는데, 산을 올라갈수록 풍경이 정말 아름다워서 기분이 좋 아지더라고요. 길을 따라 꽃이 끝없이 펼쳐져 있는 모습이 정말 인상적이었어요. 웃긴 에피소드도 있었어요. 출발할 때는 PD님이 “자, 가자!” 하면서 누구보다 자신 있게 앞장서셨는데, 출발한 지 1분도 안 돼서 숨을 헐떡이며 “도대체 얼마나 더 올 라가야 해?“라고 하시는 거예요. 그 모습이 너무 웃겨서 아직도 기억에 남아요. (웃 음) 사실 쉽지만은 않은 촬영이기도 했어요. 생각보다 햇볕이 정말 강했는데 촬영 중이 라 양산도 쓰지 못한 채 계속 걸어야 했거든요. 촬영이 끝난 뒤에는 햇빛 알레르기 가 심하게 올라오기도 했어요. 또 꽃이 정말 많았던 만큼 벌도 정말 많았어요. 풍경은 너무 아름다웠지만 벌이 제 주변을 계속 날아다녀서 조금 무섭기도 했죠. 그래도 그날의 자연과 공기, 그리고 풍경 덕분에 **‘My Secret Garden’**이 더 아름 답게 완성될 수 있었던 것 같아요. 

You have songs called “Blossom,” “Flower,” “Flower garden,” “If I am with you, it’s always spring”... Is releasing a song called “My Secret Garden” a coincidence or a purposeful continuation of the garden theme?
'Blossom', 'Flower', 'Flower garden', 'If I am with you, it’s always spring' 등 꽃이나 정원과 관련된 제목의 곡들이 많은데요. 'My Secret Garden'이라는 곡을 발매한 것은 우연인가요, 아니면 정원이나 식물이라는 테마를 의도적으로 이어가려는 시도인가요?
It wasn’t a conscious decision to continue a flower or garden theme. The reason flowers appear so often in my lyrics is because I think they’re one of the most beautiful gifts nature has given us, yet they’re also one of the easiest things to overlook. Flowers symbolize beauty, but they also carry joy and sorrow. They’re present on one of the happiest days of our lives, a wedding, and on one of the saddest, a funeral. That’s why I think flowers are one of the most expressive symbols of human emotions. Depending on how you look at them, they can tell completely different stories. In the end, I may be writing about flowers, but I’m really writing about people. 
의도적으로 꽃이나 정원이라는 테마를 이어가려고 한 건 아니에요. 다만 제 가사에 꽃이 자주 등장하는 이유는, 꽃이 자연이 우리에게 준 가장 아름다 운 선물 중 하나이면서도 가장 쉽게 지나쳐 버리는 존재라고 생각하기 때문이에요. 꽃은 아름다움의 상징이기도 하지만, 아이러니하게도 행복과 슬픔을 모두 품고 있 는 존재이기도 하잖아요. 가장 행복한 날인 결혼식에도 꽃이 있고, 가장 슬픈 날인 장례식에도 꽃이 함께해요. 그래서 저는 꽃이라는 소재가 사람의 감정을 가장 다양하게 표현할 수 있는 존재라 고 생각해요. 어떻게 바라보느냐에 따라 전혀 다른 이야기를 들려줄 수 있고, 결국 꽃을 이야기 하는 것 같지만 사실은 사람을 이야기하고 있는 셈이죠. 그래서 제 음악 속에 꽃이 자주 등장하는 것 같아요. 

Do you have plans to include “My Secret Garden” on any upcoming EP or full album?
향후 발매할 EP나 정규 앨범에 'My Secret Garden'을 수록할 계획이 있으신가요?
I don’t have any concrete plans for an EP or full-length album just yet, but if the concept and musical direction of a future album naturally connect with “My Secret Garden,” I’d love for it to be part of that journey. When I make an album, I think beyond individual songs. I want the entire record to feel like one continuous story. If this song finds its place in that story someday, I’d be very happy. 
아직 EP나 정규 앨범에 대한 구체적인 계획은 없어요. 하지만 앞으로 만들게 될 앨범의 콘셉트와 음악적인 흐름이 **‘My Secret Garden’ **과 자연스럽게 이어진다면 함께 수록될 수도 있을 것 같아요. 저는 앨범을 만들 때 각각의 곡도 중요하지만, 앨범 전체가 하나의 이야기처럼 이 어지는 걸 더 중요하게 생각하는 편이에요. 그래서 언젠가 이 곡이 그 이야기에 자연스럽게 녹아든다면, 꼭 함께하고 싶습니 다. 

Please talk about the EP you released earlier this year, 4th.
올해 초 발매한 EP '4th'에 대해서도 이야기해 주세요.
4th is one of the most meaningful EPs I’ve ever made, because it celebrates the fourth anniversary of my solo debut. On April 4, my debut anniversary, I held a fan meeting called “First.” The EP began as a way to create a special memory that my fans and I could share together, but it became much more than a commemorative project. Celebrating four years made me reflect on who I have been as an artist and who I want to become next. That’s why I chose songs that best represent who I am today. 
**‘4th’**는 솔로 데뷔 4주년을 맞아 만든, 저에게 정말 의미 있는 EP예요. 올해 4월 4일, 데뷔일에 맞춰 **‘처음’**이라는 팬미팅을 열었는데요. 팬분들과 함 께 4주년을 기념할 수 있는 특별한 추억을 만들고 싶다는 마음에서 시작된 앨범입 니다. 하지만 단순히 기념하기 위한 앨범은 아니었어요. 4주년은 저에게 지난 시간을 돌아보면서 **‘나는 어떤 음악을 해왔고, 앞으로는 어 떤 음악을 하고 싶은 사람인가’**를 다시 생각하게 만든 시간이기도 했거든요. 그래서 지금의 저를 가장 잘 보여줄 수 있는 음악들을 담고 싶었어요.
“Stress” is an honest reflection of the pressure and emotions I’ve experienced throughout my life. Ironically, singing it has become a way for me to release my stress, and I hope listeners can find that same sense of relief. 
**‘Stress’**는 살아오면서 느꼈던 스트레스와 감정을 솔직하게 담아낸 곡이에요.  저 역시 이 노래를 부르면서 위로를 받았고, 듣는 분들도 힘든 순간 이 노래를 통해 스트레스를 조금이나마 내려놓을 수 있었으면 하는 마음을 담았습니다. 
“Wings” represents my determination to keep chasing my dreams, while also encouraging anyone who’s pursuing theirs. 
반대로 **‘날개’**는 앞으로도 계속 꿈을 향해 달려가겠다는 제 다짐이자, 같은 꿈 을 꾸는 분들에게 전하는 응원의 메시지예요. 
“Rehearsal” begins with heartbreak, but it’s ultimately about hope. I want people to be able to tell themselves, “Maybe that love was just a rehearsal for the real one.” 
**‘Rehearsal’**은 이별을 겪은 뒤의 아픔에 대한 노래이지만, 결국은 다시 사랑할 수 있다는 희망을 담은 곡이에요. 너무 오래 아픔 속에 머물러 있기보다, **“그 사 랑은 진짜 사랑을 만나기 위한 리허설이었어.”**라고 스스로에게 말해주길 바라는 마음으로 만들었습니다. 
Finally, “Your World” captures those innocent feelings we all experience when we first begin to fall for someone. 
그리고 **‘너의 세계’**는 누군가를 좋아하게 되었을 때 누구나 한 번쯤 느껴봤을 설렘과 순수한 감정을 담은 곡입니다. 

On the EP 4th, why did you specifically choose to revisit “Rehearsal” and “Your World”?
EP '4th'에서 'Rehearsal'과 'Your World'를 다시 작업할 곡으로 선정하신 이유는 무엇인가요?
Both songs naturally fit the story I wanted 4th to tell. “Your World” especially has always felt like the song that best represents me as a solo artist. Revisiting it on my fourth anniversary felt meaningful, because I could bring not only my current emotions [into it], but also everything I’d learned over the past four years. The arrangement changed, and so did my voice. I think listeners will notice that difference from the very first line. To me, it isn’t simply a re-recording; it’s a reflection of how I’ve grown as both a singer and a person. 
두 곡 모두 **‘4th’**라는 앨범이 전하고 싶은 이야기와 가장 잘 어울린다고 생각했 어요. 특히 **‘너의 세계’**는 제가 솔로로 데뷔했을 때 가장 저다운 음악이라고 생각했 던 곡이에요. 그래서 4주년이라는 의미 있는 시점에 지금의 감정과 음악적인 성장을 담아 다시 들려드리고 싶었습니다. 편곡도 새롭게 했고, 보컬도 처음 녹음했을 때와는 표현 방식이 많이 달라졌어요. 같은 노래지만 첫 소절부터 분위기가 달라졌다는 걸 느끼실 수 있을 거예요. 저는 그 변화가 단순히 노래를 다시 부른 것이 아니라, 지난 4년 동안 제가 어떻게 성장해 왔는지를 들려주는 과정이라고 생각합니다.

What are the biggest similarities and differences between the albums Desperate and reFRESH?
앨범 'Desperate'와 'reFRESH'의 가장 큰 공통점과 차이점은 무엇인가요?
The biggest similarity is that both albums are rooted in acoustic sounds and explore heartbreak. The difference is in how they tell that story. On Desperate, the emotional center is the live string arrangement. The strings almost feel as though they’re crying alongside me, making every emotion even more intimate. On reFRESH, the driving forces are the drums and guitars. Instead of staying in sadness, the powerful band sound pushes you towards healing. 
두 앨범의 가장 큰 공통점은 모두 어쿠스틱 사운드를 기반으로 하고 있고, 이별이 라는 감정을 이야기하고 있다는 점이에요. 하지만 같은 이별이라도 표현하는 방식은 완전히 다릅니다. **‘Desperate’**에서는 리얼 스트링이 가장 중요한 사운드예요. 마치 스트링이 함께 울어주는 것처럼 슬픔을 더욱 깊고 애절하게 표현해 주죠. 반대로 **‘reFRESH’**에서는 드럼과 기타가 중심이 됩니다. 강렬한 밴드 사운드가 슬픔에 머무르기보다 다시 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 힘을 만들어줘요. 
Heartbreak isn’t always the same. Some days you need to cry, and other days you want to stand up again. To me, Desperate and reFRESH are like two different journals, each capturing a different chapter of the same emotion.
같은 이별을 이야기하고 있지만, 어떤 날은 마음껏 울고 싶고, 어떤 날은 다시 일어 나고 싶잖아요. 저에게 **‘Desperate’**와 **‘reFRESH’**는 그런 서로 다른 감정을 담아낸 두 권의 일기 같은 앨범입니다. 

What are the biggest differences between life in a group and life as a solo artist? And has anything surprised you about what’s different now as a soloist?
그룹 활동과 솔로 아티스트로서의 삶은 어떤 점이 가장 다른가요? 그리고 솔로로 활동하면서 새롭게 알게 되어 놀랐던 점이 있나요?
The biggest difference is that I have to carry the entire stage on my own [now]. When I was in a group, the choreography and performance naturally shared the spotlight with the music. As a solo artist, I feel that the music itself has become both the beginning and the end of every performance. There was something else that surprised me, too. Back then, I used to think, “If I’m not dancing, singing live will probably be much easier.” But once I started performing alone, I realized that wasn’t true at all. Even without choreography, the moment the music starts, my heart begins racing with the tempo. I think it’s because I’ve come to feel a much greater sense of responsibility for everything that happens on stage. I still get nervous before every performance. But once I sing the first line, those nerves slowly disappear, and by the end of the song, I find myself completely immersed in the moment. These days, I don’t try to get rid of my nerves anymore. I accept them as part of performing. To me, being nervous simply means that I still care deeply about every stage I step on. 
가장 큰 차이점은 무대를 혼자 이끌어가야 한다는 점이에요. 그룹 활동을 할 때는 퍼포먼스와 안무가 중심이었고, 음악은 그 위에 자연스럽게 더해지는 느낌이었다면, 솔로 아티스트가 된 지금은 음악 자체가 무대의 시작이자 끝이라는 생각이 들어요. 그리고 솔로 활동을 하면서 새롭게 알게 된 점도 있어요. 예전에는 춤을 추면서 노래할 때 심장이 터질 것처럼 힘들어도 아무렇지 않은 척 노래해야 했어요. 그래서 막연히 **‘춤만 추지 않으면 훨씬 편하게 노래할 수 있지 않을까?’**라고 생각했는데, 막상 혼자 무대에 서 보니 전혀 그렇지 않더라고요. 춤을 추지 않아도 음악이 시작되는 순간 제 심장도 음악의 BPM에 맞춰 뛰는 것처 럼 긴장이 돼요. 예전에는 몰랐는데, 시간이 지나면서 무대에 대한 책임감이 더 커졌기 때문이 아닐 까 생각해요. 지금도 무대에 오르기 전에는 긴장합니다. 하지만 첫 소절을 부르기 시작하면 조금 씩 긴장이 풀리고, 공연이 끝날 때쯤에는 그 순간을 즐기고 있는 저를 발견하게 돼 요. 이제는 긴장을 없애려고 하기보다, 그 긴장도 무대의 일부라고 받아들이려고 해요.  긴장한다는 건 그만큼 무대를 소중하게 생각한다는 뜻이니까요.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
단기적, 장기적인 활동 목표는 무엇인가요?
My short-term goal is simple: I want more people to discover me as an artist. There are still so many people who haven’t heard my music yet, and I’d love to have more opportunities to share it through live performances and new projects. In the long term, I hope to perform all over the world, not just in Korea. I truly believe that even if we don’t speak the same language, we can still share the same emotions through music. One day, I hope to stand on stages around the world and hear people singing my songs together. That’s my biggest dream. 
단기적인 목표는 더 많은 분들에게 가수 김혜림이라는 사람을 알리는 거예요. 아직 제 음악을 들어보지 못한 분들도 많다고 생각해요. 그래서 더 다양한 무대와 활동을 통해 제 음악을 들려드릴 기회가 많아졌으면 좋겠습니다. 장기적으로는 한국을 넘어 해외에서도 공연을 많이 하는 아티스트가 되고 싶어요. 저는 언어는 달라도 감정은 충분히 전해질 수 있다고 믿어요. 언젠가는 세계 여러 나라에서 제 노래를 함께 따라 불러주시고, 같은 감정을 함께 나누는 순간을 만나는 것이 제 가장 큰 꿈입니다. 

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?
마지막으로, 본인이나 본인의 음악에 대해 더 하고 싶은 말씀이 있으신가요?
I still feel that there are so many sides of both my music and myself that I haven’t had the chance to share yet. There are still many stories I want to tell, both as an artist and as Kim Hye Rim. The fact that my fans continue to wait for me and support me through every step of my journey means more to me than I can put into words. I’ll continue working hard so I can repay that love with better music and more opportunities to meet everyone. I want to keep making songs that people can smile to, sing together, and carry with them throughout their lives. Thank you, always. And from the bottom of my heart, I love you.
