For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “Dahye is ___” or “Dahye’s music is ___”?
당신의 음악을 처음 들어보는 사람들에게, 어떻게 설명해 주시겠어요? "다혜는 ___" 또는 "다혜의 음악은 ___"이라는 문장을 어떻게 마무리 지으시겠어요?
People often introduce me as a former girl group member or as someone who appeared on a dating show, but if I were to describe myself to someone who has never heard my music, I would say, “Dahye is someone who truly loves the stage. Dahye’s music is the way she looks at life.”
저에게는 이런저런 수식어가 많은 편이에요. 걸그룹 출신이라든지, 연애 프로그램 출연자라든지… 만약 제 음악을 들어보지 못한 사람들이 있다면, “저 다혜는 무대를 사랑하는 사람이다.” “다혜의 음악은 다혜가 인생을 바라보는 시선이다.” 라고 설명하고 싶어요.

Please describe your new album, Prologue at the End!
새 앨범 Prologue at the End에 대해 설명해 주세요!
This album means so much to me, because it’s the first time I truly poured my everything into a project. Until now, I had mostly approached music as a performer, but this time, I took part in writing the lyrics for every single track, shaping the story and arranging the flow. The sense of fulfillment from crafting the narrative was incredible. On the surface, the album seems like a collection of love stories. But in reality, it’s more about my own emotions as someone who lives through music. Looking back, I realized that music feels to me like falling in love.
이번 앨범에 대해서는 정말 하고 싶은 이야기가 많아요. 무엇보다 “이 앨범으로 처음으로 나의 모든 것을 쏟아냈다” 라고 자신 있게 말할 수 있을 것 같아요. 그동안은 참여하는 정도, 혹은 플레이어로서 음악에 임했다면 이번 앨범은 전곡 작사에 참여하며 비로소 저의 이야기를 온전히 담았다고 할 수 있거든요. 트랙 순서를 짜고, 이야기의 결을 맞춰가는 과정에서 느낀 희열이 정말 컸습니다. 앨범에 대한 전체적인 이야기를 조금 풀어볼게요.겉으로는 사랑 이야기를 담은 것 같지만, 사실은 음악을 하는 저 자신이 느끼는 감정에 더 가깝습니다. 돌이켜보니, 음악은 저에게 사랑과도 같은 존재더라고요.

“Poison”: This song was such an honor for me, because it originally belonged to the legendary Uhm Jung-hwa, and I had the privilege of featuring on it. I admired her for so long, so I remember preparing with extra care not to fall short. Since it was also my very first step as a solo artist, the entire process was filled with nervous excitement.
우선 ‘Poison’ 은 엄정화 선배님의 곡을 영광스럽게 피처링하게 된 곡이에요. 평소에 워낙 존경하던 선배님의 곡이었기 때문에 피해가 되지 않도록 정말 열심히 준비했던 기억이 납니다. 특히 솔로로서 첫걸음이었기 때문에 준비 과정 자체가 긴장의 연속이었어요. 

“Bad Blood”: The moment I heard this track, I instantly felt, “I have to sing this.” At that time, I was listening to countless songs, searching for the right one for my solo debut. As soon as “Bad Blood” played, I knew that was it. I think it also reflected my desire to express a mood I couldn’t fully show during my girl group days.
이 곡을 듣는 순간 "이건 꼭 불러야겠다"는 생각이 들었어요. 당시 솔로 데뷔곡으로 딱 맞는 곡을 찾아 수많은 노래를 듣고 있었거든요. "Bad Blood"가 나오는 순간, 바로 이거구나 싶었죠. 걸그룹 시절에는 제대로 보여주지 못했던 감정을 표현하고 싶다는 마음이 담겨 있었던 것 같아요.

“Cherry Road”: This song came to me during a period of deep contemplation after a long hiatus. In fact, it was the song that made me decide, “I have to put out an album.” My current producer strongly recommended it as a must-release track. What drew me [to it the] most wasn’t how I could perform it on stage or what kind of attitude I [could] bring, but simply how beautiful the song sounded.
‘Cherry Road’ 역시 긴 공백기 이후 처음으로 선보이는 앨범이라 고민이 많던 시기에, 사실은 “앨범 자체를 준비해서 내야겠다” 라는 마음을 먹게 해준 곡이에요. 저의 현재 프로듀서가 이 곡으로 꼭 나와야 한다며 강력히 추천하기도 했고요. 이 곡은 무대를 어떻게 표현할지, 어떤 태도로 임할지보다도 단순히 노래 자체가 너무 좋아서 선택했다고 할 수 있을 것 같아요.

“Lemon Cherry Bomb”: When I first heard this track, I immediately wanted to bring it to life on stage. It contained the exact mood I had longed to express. The phrase “Lemon Cherry Bomb” might sound like a sweet, pretty fruit on the outside, but it represents a woman with immense potential and explosive power within. It also embodies my ambition: “I will take control of the music and my own story. Can you handle it?” I had always wanted to perform a bold, powerful summer anthem that celebrates strong women, and this song finally allowed me to do so.
이 곡은 처음 들었을 때부터 꼭 무대로 표현하고 싶다는 생각이 들었어요. 그동안 제가 표현하고 싶었던 무드가 그대로 담겨 있었거든요. Lemon Cherry Bomb 이라는 키워드는 겉으로는 달콤하고 예쁜 과일 같지만, 속에는 엄청난 잠재력과 폭발력을 가진 여성을 상징합니다. 동시에 “음악과 나의 상황을 장악하겠다. 넌 감당할 수 있겠어?” 라는 저의 포부를 담은 곡이기도 합니다. 늘 진취적이고 당당한 여성을 표현하는 여름 타이틀곡을 하고 싶다는 열망이 있었는데, 이 곡으로 드디어 그 꿈을 이룰 수 있었던 것 같아요.

“RACE”: This is one of my absolute favorite songs. At first glance, it might sound like it’s about a sensual relationship between two people, but in truth, it reflects my anxiety. To me, the most intense race is the one against myself, especially against my own fears. I wrote it while imagining the chaos of running in circles on a track, consumed by anxiety that feels like it could swallow me whole. That’s the moment I dread most, but also the one that fuels my growth.
The line “Don’t say ‘good for nothing’ about me, not enough / Just don’t talk about me, shh” is the part where I feel the most exhilaration. In fact, the first verse came to me while staring at myself in the mirror, as if I was racing against my own reflection.
두 번째 타이틀곡인 RACE 는 제가 정말 애정하는 곡이에요. 언뜻 들으면 남녀 간의 본능적이고 섹슈얼한 관계를 다루는 것 같지만, 사실은 제 내면의 불안을 표현한 곡입니다. 제가 생각하는 가장 치열한 레이스는 바로 자신과의 레이스, 특히 불안과의 싸움이에요. 한순간 나를 집어삼킬 것 같은 불안감, 일직선이 아닌 원을 그리며 제자리만 도는 듯한 혼란을 음악적으로 담아냈습니다. 실제로 제가 가장 두려워하고 경계하는 순간이기도 했고요. 하지만 결국 불안이라는 감정은 저를 무너뜨리지 못하고, 오히려 성장으로 이끄는 발판이 된다는 이야기를 전하고 싶었어요. “Don’t say good for nothing about me, not enough / Just don’t talk about me, shh” 이 부분이 가장 희열이 느껴지는 순간입니다. 실제로 거울을 보다가 첫 벌스의 아이디어가 떠올리기도 했어요.

“Sick of Love” (ft. YOUHA): This beautiful track was written by the amazing artist YOUHA, and I chose it because I immediately fell in love with her voice and emotions when I heard it. The song conveys the idea of choosing to love someone even if it’s difficult, rather than living a comfortable life without them. The phrase “sick of love” carries both the meaning of being exhausted by love and the painful beauty of it, which makes it such a powerful title. I especially love the chorus when it says, “Hold me, let me go.” It reflects the feeling of being unable to move either way, leaving all the power in the other person’s hands.
너무 멋진 가수 유하 님께서 참여해 주신 Sick of Love 는 “너 없이 편안한 행복을 택하느니, 힘들더라도 너를 품고 사랑하겠다”는 내용을 담은 곡이에요. Sick of Love 는 ‘지긋지긋하다’라는 뜻도 있어서, 오래도록 이어지는 애증의 관계나 사랑의 아픔을 표현하기에 좋은 키워드라고 생각했어요. 특히 후렴의 “날 잡아줘, 날 놓아줘” 라는 가사는 이러지도 저러지도 못하는 상태, 결국 모든 결정권이 상대에게 있다는 의미를 담고 있어서 더욱 좋아하는 부분입니다.

“VOTD(Day of)”: This is another track [that is] very dear to me. It was actually the first song I chose for the album, because it made me want to tell my own story through music. To me, life is built one day at a time, and those daily emotions eventually define who we are. That’s how the phrase “VOTD” came about, inspired by “OOTD,” but instead of choosing an outfit, you choose your mood for the day. By dressing yourself in that feeling, you take ownership of your life.
제가 정말 아끼는 곡이에요. 사실 이 앨범을 “내 음악 이야기로 채워야겠다” 라고 다짐하며, 가장 먼저 마지막 트랙으로 정한 곡이기도 해요. 인생은 결국 하루하루가 모여 만들어진다고 생각하거든요. 그 하루 속 감정들이 결국 나를 이루는 전부니까요. 그래서 VOTD 라는 키워드를 떠올렸습니다. OOTD(Outfit of the Day)에서 착안해, 옷을 입듯이 나의 하루 기분을 직접 골라 입는다. 그게 곧 나의 삶을 주체적으로 이끌어갈 힘이 될 것이라는 의미를 담았어요.

Can you talk more about working with YOUHA on “Sick of Love”?
YOUHA와의 "Sick of Love" 작업에 대해 더 자세히 말씀해 주시겠어요?
Since YOUHA wrote the song, I was already captivated by her voice and sensibility the first time I heard it. When she agreed to feature on it, I couldn’t have been happier. During recording, her directing was so clear and insightful, and we connected well on how to interpret the song. She guided me on how to use my voice in specific ways, which made the track even stronger. On top of that, she has such a bright and wonderful personality, so the entire process was joyful!
Sick of Love 는 유하 님이 직접 쓰신 곡이에요. 처음 들었을 때부터 유하 님의 목소리와 감성이 너무 좋아서 선택했는데, 참여해 주신다고 했을 때 정말 누구보다 기뻤습니다. 녹음할 때도 디렉팅을 너무 확실하게 해주셔서 해석이 잘 통한다는 생각이 들었고, 덕분에 곡이 더 단단해졌어요. 목소리 사용에 대한 세밀한 가이드도 주셔서 큰 도움이 되었고요. 무엇보다 성격이 밝고 좋은 분이라서 즐거운 작업이었습니다!

If you had to make another song on Prologue at the End a collaboration, who would you pick as the featured artist?
Prologue at the End에 수록된 또 다른 노래를 협업으로 만들어야 한다면, 피처링 아티스트로 누구를 고르시겠어요?
Personally, I admire artists like Kwon Jin-ah and Jay Park, and I would love the opportunity to collaborate with them someday!
개인적으로 권진아 님, 박재범 선배님을 정말 좋아해서 언젠가 꼭 함께 작업해 보고 싶습니다!

Why did you choose “Lemon Cherry Bomb” and “RACE” to be the songs from Prologue at the End to get music videos?
Prologue at the End의 뮤직비디오 촬영을 위해 "Lemon Cherry Bomb"과 "RACE"를 선택한 이유는 무엇인가요?
“Lemon Cherry Bomb” was my personal choice for a title track because I had always envisioned performing it as a powerful stage piece. On the other hand, “RACE” was the song I connected with the most emotionally; its message felt too meaningful to leave behind. Since the two songs had such contrasting moods, I couldn’t bear to choose only one. 
Lemon Cherry Bomb 은 무대 전체를 상상하며 꼭 타이틀로 하고 싶었던 곡이에요. 반면 RACE 는 제가 가장 좋아하는 곡이고, 메시지가 특별하다고 생각했어요. 이렇게 서로 다른 무드를 가진 곡을 각각의 타이틀로 정하게 되었죠.

What can new subscribers expect from your YouTube channel, and do you plan to continue to upload new videos regularly? 
새로운 구독자들은 유튜브 채널에서 무엇을 기대할 수 있을까요? 그리고 앞으로도 정기적으로 새 영상을 업로드할 계획이신가요?
It’s hard to believe, but my YouTube channel has been around for nearly ten years. I started it with music and dance performance videos, and although I now share vlogs and glimpses of daily life, it has always been rooted in music. I plan to continue documenting my musical journey there. No matter how busy I get, I try to upload at least once a week to stay connected with my audience.
제 유튜브 채널이 어느새 10년 가까이 되었더라고요. 처음에는 음악과 안무 영상으로 시작했고, 지금은 일상이나 브이로그도 많이 올리지만 음악적 색깔은 그대로 남아 있어요. 앞으로도 꾸준히 음악 활동을 담아낼 예정이고, 아무리 바빠도 주 1회 이상은 업로드하며 소통하려고 합니다.

What is next for you? What hints can you give about upcoming projects?!
앞으로 어떤 계획이 있으신가요? 앞으로의 프로젝트에 대해 어떤 힌트를 주실 수 있을까요?!
While promoting this album, I’ve also been preparing my next one. I have a strong feeling that I’ll be working alongside someone special for it, which makes me very excited!
이번 활동을 하면서도 이미 다음 앨범을 준비하고 있었어요. 왠지 든든한 누군가와 함께하게 될 것 같은 느낌이 듭니다!
