CRACKER: “I believe wit is important in any situation”

CRACKER (aka KOREA CRACKER) explains what makes his style stand out.

For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “CRACKER is ___” or “CRACKER’s music is ___”?
CRACKER의 음악을 아직 들어보지 못한 사람들에게 어떻게 설명하시겠어요? "CRACKER는 ___이다" 또는 "CRACKER의 음악은 ___이다"라는 문장을 어떻게 완성하시겠어요?
“CRACKER's music is the crisp, crunchy sound of inspiration.”
“CRACKER 의 음악은 영감이 바삭거리는 소리이다.” 

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?  
음악 활동을 시작하게 된 계기는 무엇이었나요?
I was in a band club in high school. When I felt myself becoming popular at school back then, I thought to myself that I should pursue this path. 
고등학생 때 밴드부를 했었는데, 그때 학교에서 인기가 많아지는 것을 느끼고 이 길로 가야겠다고 생각했습니다. 

How did you decide on your stage name, and did you consider any other names first? 
활동명은 어떻게 정하게 되셨나요? 다른 활동명도 고려하신 적이 있나요? 
Originally, I boldly named [myself] “CRIMEBEAT” with the thought of, “Let’s steal people's hearts with my beats!” But when I saw that the public got confused trying to remember the name, I thought, “Right... I should just go with a snack that anyone can easily relate to” and changed it to “CRACKER.”
원래는 ‘CRIMEBEAT’였습니다. ‘비트로 사람들의 마음을 훔쳐보자!’ 하며 호기롭게 지었는데, 대중들이 이름을 기억할 때 혼란스러워하는 것을 보고 ‘그래… 누구나 쉽게 접할 수 있는 과자로 해야겠다!’ 하며 크래커로 바꿨습니다.

Please talk about your newest single, “Microhabitat”!
최신 싱글 "Microhabitat"에 대해 설명해 주세요! 
It's a story about a couple with contrasting mindsets, one who draws up hope even in a small, cramped room, and another who shivers in extreme pessimism, as they endure and live on through love. 
좁은 방에서도 누군가는 희망을 길어 올리고, 누군가는 지독한 염세에 몸을 떠는 상반된 마음의 연인이 사랑으로 버티며 살아가는 이야기입니다. 

What is something people might be surprised to learn about the making of “Microhabitat”?  
"Microhabitat" 제작 과정에 대해 사람들이 알면 놀랄 만한 점이 있다면 무엇일까요? 
To show that the two people are in the exact same space, we set the male and female versions to the same musical key. 
두 사람이 같은 공간에 있음을 보여주기 위해 남자 버전과 여자 버전의 키를 같게 했습니다. 

Your music videos have a very unique style! What is an important feature you feel must always be included in your music videos? In other words, what should make people think, “This is a CRACKER music video”?
CRACKER 의 뮤직비디오는 매우 독특한 스타일을 가지고 있어요! “이건 CRACKER 뮤직비디오야”라고 생각하게 만드는 요소는 무엇인가요? 다시 말해, 뮤직비디오에 항상 담아야 한다고 생각하는 중요한 특징은 무엇인가요? 
I believe wit is important in any situation. Adding a pinch of wit amidst seriousness seems to be the unique characteristic of a CRACKER music video. 
어떤 상황에서든 위트는 중요하다고 생각합니다. 뮤직비디오 역시 진지함 속에 위트 한 꼬집을 섞는 것이 크래커 뮤직비디오만의 특징인 것 같습니다. 

What has been the most fun music video to film so far, and why? 
지금까지 촬영한 뮤직비디오 중 가장 재미있었던 것은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요? 
Through “Where Time Turns,” I tried acting for the very first time. Since it was a shoot with other artists, it felt a bit unfamiliar and awkward at first, but the process itself was incredibly fun and refreshing. 
‘시간의 모퉁이’를 통해 처음으로 연기에 도전해 봤습니다. 다른 아티스트들과 함께하는 촬영이라 처음에는 조금 낯설고 어색하기도 했지만, 그 과정 자체가 무척 즐겁고 신선한 경험이었습니다.

“Leave”: I was overwhelmed by daily life and wanted to go far away, but it wasn't easy to do so. I made this song to at least send my heart away somewhere. 
“Leave” : 일상에 치여 멀리 떠나고 싶었는데 녹록지 않아 그러지 못했습니다. 마음만은 어딘가로 떠나보내기 위해 만든 곡이에요. 

“Cracker”: I’m [the personality type] INFJ, and I wanted to explain the kind of person I am. I think I got inspiration [from] self-reflection. 
“Cracker” : 저는 INFJ 인데, 저라는 사람을 설명하고 싶었습니다. 나 자신을 돌아보면서 영감을 받았던 것 같습니다. 

“We don’t talk”: Doing a duet with CHEEZE on this track turned us into “Cheeze Cracker”!
“We don’t talk” : 이 곡에서 치즈님과 듀엣을 하며 ‘치즈크래커’가 되었다는… 

“with you”: There’s a version sung just by me hidden somewhere on the official CRACKER YouTube channel! 
“with you” : 크래커 공식 유튜브 채널에 제가 부른 버전도 어딘가 숨겨져 있어요! 

“Rudolph’s Secret”: It seemed like people were only curious about Santa’s story and not Rudolph’s, so I made this track.
“Rudolph’s Secret” : 사람들은 산타의 이야기만 궁금해하고 루돌프 이야기는 궁금해하지 않는 것 같아서 만들어봤습니다.

“Where Time Turns”: This was the first song I sang together with my closest colleagues. From the production to the music video shoot, it became a very special memory. 
“Where Time Turns” : 가장 친한 동료들과 처음으로 함께 노래했던 곡입니다. 작업부터 뮤직비디오 촬영까지 특별한 추억이 되었습니다. 

Your illustrated album covers have a nice consistent style to them! Do those illustrations all come from the same artist? 
앨범 커버 일러스트들이 일관성 있는 멋진 스타일을 가지고 있네요! 일러스트는 모두 같은 아티스트가 작업한 건가요? 
Except for the first two albums, all covers were done with the artist 그림비. When we collaborated, the point I emphasized the most was unraveling the inspiration from the music into the drawings. Thanks to that, each cover became an art piece that implicitly captures the narrative of the song. 
초창기 두 앨범을 제외한 모든 커버는 그림비 작가님과 함께했습니다. 협업 당시 제가 가장 강조했던 점은 음악에서 얻은 영감을 그림으로 풀어내 달라는 것이었습니다. 덕분에 각 커버는 그 노래의 서사를 함축적으로 담아내는 예술이 되었습니다. 

Out of the many songs you have made with Hoyeon Kim, which one is your favorite, and why?  
김호연과 함께 작업한 많은 곡들 중 가장 좋아하는 곡은 무엇이고, 그 이유는 무엇인가요? 
Personally, I like “Hate you.” We worked on every part of the song together, from lyric-writing [to] arranging. The song could have easily been monotonous if I had done it alone, but through collaboration, it was completed dramatically, which was very satisfying. It became a song I listen to often. 
개인적으로 ‘미워해’를 좋아합니다. 작곡, 작사, 편곡까지 모든 과정을 처음부터 함께 고민하며 작업했습니다. 혼자였다면 자칫 단조로웠을 곡이 협업을 통해 드라마틱하게 완성되어 만족스러웠고, 발매된 이후에도 자주 듣는 노래가 되었습니다.

What is one of the proudest moments of your career so far? 
지금까지의 경력 중 가장 자랑스러웠던 순간 중 하나는 무엇인가요?
On the day of my first solo concert, I was so overwhelmed, wondering if I had ever received this much love in my entire life. I thought, “I'm glad I [pursued] music,” and for the first time, I felt truly proud of myself. 
첫 단독 콘서트를 하던 날, 살면서 이런 사랑을 또 받아본 적이 있었나 싶을 만큼 벅찼습니다. ‘음악 하길 잘했다’는 생각이 들었고, 처음으로 스스로가 자랑스러웠습니다. 

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?  
단기 및 장기적인 활동 목표는 무엇인가요? 
CRACKER making music is great, but I wonder if people might sometimes be curious about the ordinary side of CRACKER. It’s nothing grandiose, but through [social media sites] like YouTube or Instagram, I want to share my small, everyday stories one by one, like what kind of worries I usually have and what kind of scenery I see. 
음악 만드는 크래커도 좋지만, 가끔은 그냥 평범한 크래커의 모습도 궁금하시지 않을까 합니다. 거창하지는 않지만 유튜브나 인스타 같은 SNS 를 통해 제가 평소에 어떤 고민을 하고 어떤 풍경을 보며 사는지,  소소한 이야기들을 하나씩 들려드리고 싶습니다. 

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?  
마지막으로, 자신이나 음악에 대해 하고 싶은 말이 있다면 말씀해주세요. 
Some [of my] songs are rock-bottom depressing, while others are as bright as floating above the clouds. So please look for my music with a light heart, just like you would when picking out a snack. Eating too much will only give you an upset stomach, after all! I hope you enjoy it comfortably, in small, everyday bites!
