CHOSNG’s Empathetic Outlook

The artist talks about her new EP and its message that everyone has inherent, “radiant” value.

For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “CHOSNG is ___” or “CHOSNG’s music is ___”?
CHOSNG의 음악을 처음 접하는 사람들에게 어떻게 설명하시겠어요? "CHOSNG은 ___  이다" 또는 "CHOSNG의 음악은 ___ 이다"라는 문장을 어떻게 완성하시겠어요?  
“CHOSNG is CHOSNG,” [and] “CHOSNG has truly lived up to the name”! Ever since I first began making music, I have consistently held onto the thought that rather than aspiring to become my own genre, I want to be a musician defined by an irreplaceable vocal tone. I aspire to become a singer whose identity can be fully explained by the sound of my voice alone.
CHOSNG is CHOSNG! 초승이 초승했다! 하나의 장르가 되고싶다기보다는, 대체할 수 없는 ‘음색’의 뮤지션이 되고싶다는 생각을 음 악을 시작할때부터 줄곧 해왔습니다. 그래서 목소리 하나만으로 설명이되는 가수가 되고싶 어요.  

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?
음악 활동을 시작하게 된 계기는 무엇이었나요?
Due to various personal circumstances, I spent my entire twenties unable to fully pursue my dream of becoming a singer. Then, in the summer of my twenty-ninth year, I [had] firm resolve. With the mindset that I absolutely had to take on the dreams I couldn't fulfill in my twenties during my thirties, and thinking, “Since I'm starting late anyway, I might as well do it properly and work even harder,” I began my journey. It feels like it happened just the other day, yet five years have already passed since I made that shining pledge.
여러가지 개인적인 이유로 20대 내내 가수의 꿈을 활짝 펼지지못하고 살다가, 29살 여름에 다짐했습니다. 20대에 못 다 이룬 꿈을 30대에는 꼭 도전해보자는 생각으로 ‘늦은김에 더 제 대로 더 열심히 해보자’ 하며 활동을 시작하게되었어요. 엊그제 같은 일인데 벌써 반짝이던 다짐을 한지 5년이 지났네요.

Please describe your newest EP, A Place of Use, and why you chose that title.
최근 발매한 EP 앨범 'A Place of Use'에 대해 설명해 주시고, 왜 이 제목을 선택했는지도 알려주세요.
I spent more than half of last year contemplating the nature of usefulness. It was a time when I spent the majority of my days gazing out at the world through my window. The title of this album was born from the question “What is the worth of someone who does nothing but sit in a room, staring up at the sky?” I worked on this project while reflecting on those moments, the times when my sense of purpose made the world appear in vibrant, full color, and the times when my perceived uselessness made the world appear drained of color, rendered in shades of gray. I believe that one’s place of usefulness is not a fixed destination; rather, it is continuously forged anew at every juncture of life. With every such moment, with every single day that [people pause] to catch their breath, I sing with the hope that this music might reach them, standing by their side to offer a brief moment of respite. I want to convey, in a beautiful way, the truth that no one in this world is truly useless. Our worth is radiant, and we must keep moving forward until we find the places that truly recognize and cherish that value.
작년의 반 이상은 쓸모의 가치에 대해 고민하며 시간을 썼습니다. 하루의 대부분을 창문을 통해서 세상을 바라보던 때였는데, 아무일도 하지않고 방에서 하늘만 보는 나의 가치는 얼마 라고 할 수 있을까- 하는 생각에서 비롯된 앨범명이에요. 나의 쓸모로 세상이 총천연색으로 보일때와 무쓸모(쓸모없는)의 위치에서 회빛의 세상을 마주하고 섰을때를 회상하며 작업했 습니다. 쓸모의 자리는 어딘가에 정해져 있는 것이 아니라, 흔들리며 살아낸 시간의 매듭마 다 계속해서 새로 만들어진다고 생각합니다. 그때마다, 숨을 고르는 누군가의 하루마다, 그 곁을 지키고 작은 쉼을 줄 수 있는 음악으로 닿길 바라며 노래했구요. 세상에 쓸모없는 사람 은 없다는 말을 아름답게 전하고 싶었어요. 우리의 가치는 찬란하고 그 가치를 알아봐주는 자리로 계속해서 움직여야해요. 

How is A Place of Use similar or different compared to your previous EPs?
'A Place of Use'는 이전 EP 앨범들과 어떤 점이 비슷하고 어떤 점이 다른가요?
I always try to maintain my own emotional tone and mood. You will immediately notice the similarity in [the EPs’] musical colors once you listen. As for the differences, I tried out various challenges that I wanted to attempt. Although “Trace” is the genre I usually sing, a ballad, I would describe it as having a K-ballad feel rather than an indie ballad. I wanted to create a song that perfectly captures the essence of a Korean ballad. As for “To youth,” I worked on the final chorus with the thought that I wanted to sing at least one song with the audience - since my performances are mostly ballads, I was envious of singers who sing along in unison! I am a little excited at the thought of harmonizing with everyone at upcoming concerts!
늘 제가 가진 감정선과 무드를 유지하려고 노력하고있어요. 음악적인 색채가 비슷하다는건 들어보시면 바로 알아채실꺼에요. 다른점은 제가 해보고싶은 도전을 여러가지 해보았어요.  4번트랙 ‘흔’(Trace)의 장르는 제가 주로 부르는 발라드이긴 하지만, 인디 발라드의 느낌이라 기보다는 K- ballad느낌이라고 해야할까요, 딱 한국 발라드 느낌의 곡을 만들고싶었어요. 그 리고 3번트랙의 젊음의 지표야 (To youth)는 무대에서 한곡만큼은 관객분들과 함께 부르고 싶다는 생각으로 (발라드 위주의 공연이다보니 떼창하는 가수들이 부러웠습니다.ㅎ) 마지막 후렴구를 작업했어요. 다가오는 콘서트에서 다같이 호흡 맞춰볼 생각에 조금 설레입니다. 하 하

What other behind-the-scenes stories or interesting facts can you share from making the EP? 
EP 제작 과정에서 들려주실 만한 다른 비하인드 스토리나 흥미로운 사실들이 또 있을까요?
Working on the music video for “Not to fade” still feels like a dream to me! It feels dreamlike mainly because it was so incredibly cold that my memories of the day have become a bit hazy. I recall that a cold wave warning was in effect, pushing the wind chill factor past -20°C. While filming the scenes where I had to jump repeatedly on a bridge over the Han River, the biting wind made me so dizzy that I actually found myself staggering. So many people worked incredibly hard that day, and seeing such a wonderful music video come out of that effort fills me with nothing but gratitude and joy. 
타이틀곡 ‘사라지지않기를’(Not to fade) 뮤비작업이 여전히 꿈같은데요, not positive! 정말 너 무 추웠던 탓에 기억이 가물가물해서 꿈같아요. 한파주의보로 체감온도가 -20도가 넘었던걸 로 기억하는데 한강 다리 위에서 몇번이고 뛸 때는 찬바람에 어지러워서 휘청이기도 할 정도 였어요. 그날 정말 많은 분들이 고생해주셨는데 그만큼 좋은 뮤비 나와서 정말 감사하고 기 쁘기만합니다. 

I believe the primary sources of inspiration while working on the tracks for this album were ultimately breakups, loss, and emptiness. 
이번 앨범의 수록곡들을 작업할때의 원천은 아무래도 ‘이별'과 ‘상실’과 ‘허망'이지 않았나 싶어요. 

Now that the album has been released, I’ve realized just how enjoyable it is to take a single facet of a complex emotional landscape and zoom in on it to craft a song. I’ve noticed that some listeners have misunderstood me, assuming that I’m currently enduring a deeply painful romance or barely managing to survive through a difficult life. Of course, that may be the tone of my music, but my actual life isn't quite like that. Since I tend to take a specific emotion, one that looms large amid the ordinary flow of daily life, and magnify it 300-fold when I write, I suppose it’s understandable that people might get that impression. It’s actually been quite amusing to see those kinds of reactions!
발매 후에 입체적인 감정속에서 한가지 단면을 확대해서 곡을 작업하는 일이 재미있 다고 느꼈습니다. 제가 아주 아주 아픈 사랑을하고 힘들게 삶을 버티고 있다고 오해하시더라 고요. 물론 제 음악은 그렇지만 제 삶은 사실 그렇지 않거든요. 비슷하게 살아가는 와중에 커 다랗게 다가오는 감정의 일부를 300배 확대해서 쓰다보니 그렇게 오해를 받기도하는데, 그 반응이 참 재미있었습니다. ㅎㅎ

All of your EPs have exactly five tracks on them. Is there a particular reason for that?
모든 EP 앨범에는 정확히 다섯 곡이 수록되어 있는데, 특별한 이유가 있나요?
There’s no particular reason. Sometimes I jokingly answer, “Well, four songs feels like too few, but six feels like too many,” but really, it’s just a series of coincidences where, as I’m working on the tracks, the final selection always seems to naturally narrow down to five!
특별한이유는 없습니다 ‘4곡은 적은것같고 6곡은 많은것같고…’라고 장난치며 대답하기 도 하는데요, 곡을 작업하다보니 늘 5곡정도로 추려지는 우연의 연속일 뿐이에요!  

How do you know whether a song should be released by itself or as part of a pair of songs? For example, why were the songs “Wish” and “Habit” released together?
곡을 단독으로 발매할지, 아니면 두 곡과 함께 발매할지 어떻게 결정하나요? 예를 들어, "Wish"와 "Habit"은 왜 함께 발매되었나요?
I release songs together when I approach them with a similar mindset, even if they belong to vastly different genres. I tend to release them jointly when the emotional thread I feel towards both tracks, or the subject or person I am singing [about], is the same.
제가 비슷한 마음으로 대하는 곡들일때 함께 발매를 해요. 가령, 아주 다른 장르라고 하더라 도 제가 두 곡에게 갖고있는 감정선이나 혹은 노래하는 대상이 같을때 함께 발매하기로 결정 을 하는 편입니다.  

Do you plan to continue releasing singles and EPs, or do you have plans for a full-length album?
앞으로도 싱글과 EP를 계속 발매할 계획인가요, 아니면 정규 앨범 발매 계획이 있나요?
I’ve always harbored thoughts of releasing a full-length album, but I’m still not quite sure when the time will be right. I feel that once I do release a full-length album, it will feel like reaching one of the major milestones I’ve been aiming for. I look forward to and am curious about that exhilarating sense of accomplishment, yet at the same time, I know that it will be accompanied by an equal measure of responsibility and a sense of bittersweet wistfulness. I want to wait to release it until I am truly well-prepared or can remain unshaken by any of those emotions. If I were to work on another narrative-driven album next, I imagine it would likely be an EP. 
정규앨범에 대한 생각은 늘 품고 있지만 아직은 모르겠습니다. 제가 정규앨범을 발매하면 목표하고있는 지점중에 하나에 도달하는 기분일것만같아요. 그 짜릿한 성취감이 기대되고 궁금하지만, 동시에 그만큼의 책임감과 섭섭함도 함께 올 것을 알 고있어요. 그래서 정말 잘 준비가 되었을 때, 아니면 모든 감정에 흔들리지 않을 수 있을때 발 매하고싶어요. 다음에도 서사가 있는 앨범을 작업한다면 EP앨범이지 않을까요?

Out of all of your songs, which one is the most difficult to sing, and why?
당신의 노래 중 부르기 가장 어려운 곡은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇입니까?
Lately, I feel like I’ve been living in the spirit of the song “As spring passes.” Setting aside the technical difficulty of the piece, it is a song that is incredibly hard to perform live because I feel like I might break down in tears. It captures the pain of my very recent past, pain that hasn’t yet faded with time. Perhaps because those memories are still so fresh and vivid, simply listening to the recording is enough to make my eyes well up with tears.
요즘은 ‘내내 어린 마음에 (As spring passes)’ 인 것 같아요. 곡의 난이도를 떠나서 눈물이 날것 같아서 라이브하기 어려운곡이에요. 가장 가까운 과거의 아픔을 담았거든요. 아직 기억이 많 이 닳지 않아서그런지, 음원을 듣기만해도 눈물이 차오르기도 하는 곡이에요.  

Which of your songs is the most fun to sing, and why?
당신의 노래 중 부르기 가장 재미있는 노래는 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
“Night night”! Since I haven't had many opportunities to perform upbeat songs on stage, I feel quite shy and a bit self-conscious doing cute-style music at my age. Perhaps sensing that, the audience keeps looking at me and laughing. I find that whole situation absolutely hilarious: me, acting like a robot, and my fans enjoying every moment of it.
잘자! (Night night) 제가 무대에서 밝은 노래를 해본 경험이 많지 않아서, 되게 쑥쓰럽기도하 고 어리지 않은 나이로 귀여운 느낌의 음악을 하는 듯한 느낌에 민망한 느낌이 들어요. 그걸 아시는지 관객분들이 자꾸 저를 보고 웃더라고요. 저는 그 상황이 너무 재밌어요. 로봇같은 나와 그걸 즐기는 팬여러분.  

What is the best advice that a fellow musician has ever given you?
다른 음악가에게서 들었던 최고의 조언은 무엇인가요?
I remember a few years ago when the senior duo Oksang Dalbit complimented me on the radio by saying, “Yours is the best voice I’ve ever heard.” That praise became a driving force for me, giving me the strength to keep singing tirelessly for quite some time.
몇년전에 라디오에서 옥상달빛 선배님께서 “내가 들은 목소리중에 가장 좋아.” 라고 해주신 칭찬이 저한테는 원동력이 되어서 한동안 지치지않고 노래할 수 있는 힘이 되었던 기억이 있 어요.  

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
당신의 단기 및 장기적인 음악적 목표는 무엇인가요?
I don't set long-term goals, especially when it comes to my music. Instead, I simply intend to continue living my ordinary daily life just as I do now, carefully jotting down the various emotions I experience in my notebook. Later, at just the right moment, precisely when I need them most, I will pull out those passing thoughts I’ve written down and turn them into songs. As for what I’d like to try in the future, I’d love to create and share some bossa nova music, and I also hope to write many more love songs. It would be incredibly fun to produce an EP filled entirely with happy songs, rather than sad ones.
저는 장기적인 목표는 두지않아요. 게다가 음악적인 부분이라면 더더욱이요. 그저 지금처럼 평범한 매일을 살아가며 제가 느끼는 다양한 감정들을 메모장에 잘 적어둘꺼에요. 지나가듯 적어둔 문장이 제게 꼭 필요한 시점에 꺼내서 노래할꺼에요.   그냥 앞으로 해보고싶은건, 보사노바 음악을 만들어 들려드리고싶고요, 앞으로는 사랑노래 를 많이 써보고싶어요. 슬픈 노래가 아닌 행복한 노래로 가득한 EP를 만들어보는것도 너무 재밌을 것 같아요.  

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?
마지막으로, 당신이나 당신의 음악에 대해 하고 싶은 말이 더 있으신가요?
