Photo Credit: Jean-François Sauvé Anna Sofia showcases her talent for storytelling in her new single, “Cruel World,” out today. The third offering this year from the Toronto-based songstress showcases people who will do anything for power, ignoring the consequences that come with it. She reveals her realization that the world is a harsh place when you’re living as if you’re the only one in it. In the “Cruel World” official visual, Anna re-introduces the version of herself stuck in this restrictive mental state. The visual focuses on the same physical and mental confines presented in the “No.5” visual, but this time with experiments from the outside world. Part of a larger, upcoming film project from Anna, the video leaves fans questioning what’s next for Anna and if she will make it out. Her story is to be continued on her debut EP, LET ME OUT I’M FREE, arriving May 19 via Mismatched Socks Presents. Co-signed by artists like Noga Erez, Anna will also support the Israeli singer-songwriter on her tour date in Toronto, on June 29 at Velvet Underground, with more IRL experiences in the works!
Anna describes the process of creating the track: “I came into the ‘Cruel World’ session with this concept that I wanted to make a song that told a story. I know every song is a story in its own way, however, I wanted this story to be more visual, and more of a fictional story. At the time of writing this song, I was in a position in my career where I felt I was being treated as a product by the people around me. A bunch of money and power-hungry business people, using me as another stepping stone to their success. This inspired me to use this concept that I was already very eager to speak about, but turn it into some crazy fictional fairytale. We ended up making each verse [its] own separate story that, in the end, speaks on the same life lesson. We decided to use the chorus as an opportunity to sum up both stories and explain the message they were both telling: money and power can take you far, but it’s a cruel world when there’s no love.” The powerful, poignant, and wise-beyond-her-years singer-songwriter welcomes listeners to her personal thoughts through her co-directed, cinematic music videos for “Surround Me,” which comes equipped with a new NFT via Mint Songs, and “No.5,” which discusses thought confines and mental health. Anna shares: “Web3 and music NFTs [are] a new way to showcase music. The industry has been doing it the same way for so long that we were in need of something new and more artist-driven. Not only do we as artists have a new platform to share our art on, but now our fans can get involved! It brings the fan community and artist community together. I’m excited to get into this as an artist, but I am also excited to get into this community as a fan of other artists!” Stream “Cruel World” here!
