What to Watch: The premiere episode of NCT World 2.0  (English subtitles available)!
What to Listen to: DAWN’s new EP has zero skips!

This Week on 17 Carat K-Pop
On “Resonance Pt.1 is Here!!!,” I review NCT’s new album, add onto my theories regarding the deeper messages within the NCT music video universe, and take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate all the achievements NCT has made in 2020 so far!

On “Thai Hopes,” I predict the ways that Thai pop music will or will not succeed as it aims to have a more global influence, and I highlight a specific group I’m excited to hear more from in the future. Plus: news updates about BTS, A.C.E, BLACKPINK, NCT, and more!

This Week on How to Stan
On this week’s four-part, two-episode series, I explore how certain TV fandoms 1) grow to be so invested in their favorite shows, 2) save their TV shows from cancellation, 3) continuously promote their favorite shows, and 4) even crowdfund for the people behind their favorite TV shows. These episodes are a prelude to the next episode of How to Stan, which is about fan fiction and the debate surrounding who truly “owns” ideas.

Readings discussed this week include:

The savvy marketing tactics behind the success of Pretty Little Liars
An aesthetic argument for the high quality of the show Lost
Millennial Fandom: Television Audiences in the Transmedia Age by Louisa Ellen Stein
Mark Andrejevic’s analysis of the effects of “Television Without Pity”
Why Buffy pieces being sold on Ebay is considered a turning point in the history of fandom
The enduring relationship between The X Files fans and the shows’ cast and crew
Conceptualizing “The Powerless Elite”
Henry Jenkins on “Convergence Culture”
Bourdieu’s definition of fan compensation for their labor (pg.207)
Julie Russo’s argument for thinking of online fandom activity as a democratizing force for fandoms

Save this playlist to make sure you don’t miss a single episode of How to Stan!

See you next week!

Your fellow Carat,
Hope
